The Institute of Education (IOE) is a postgraduate college of the University of London and an internationally respected research centre in the field of education. The IOE was ranked number one in the UK for education research by the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, and scored a 93% rating in the 2009 National Student Survey, placing it fourth in the country for student satisfaction. The IOE offers an exceptionally wide range of masters and doctoral degrees to professionals in the field of education and related social sciences. It has first-class support services and is home to the largest education library in Europe. International students receive dedicated support from the IOE, while the diverse IOE community provides a valuable multicultural learning environment. The IOE works with a range of partners regionally, nationally and internationally.

The IOE hosts the London Mobile Learning Group (LMLG) founded and convened by Prof. Norbert Pachler. The LMLG (, an international interdisciplinary group of researchers from the fields of education, cultural and media studies, (social) semiotics, pedagogy, educational technology, work-based learning and learning design. The group is spearheading efforts in theory building in the field of mobile learning internationally. It comprises an international group of scholars which has developed a theoretical framework for mobile learning around the notion of a socio-cultural ecology. One significant output of the work of the LMLG to date, together with numerous papers at conferences, journal articles and special issues (incl. the International Journal of Mobile and Blended Learning), is an authored book: Pachler, N., Bachmair, B. and Cook, J. (2010) Mobile learning: structures, agency, practices. New York: Springer which sets out a coherent theory of mobile learning including a framework for planning and analysing examples of mobile learning projects and practice.
